Your Adaptability Talent: Responding to What’s Needed Now

"The art of being is the art of being in the moment." - Eckhart Tolle

"Adaptability" is my second talent, and it's one I often rely on. When plans fall apart or unexpected challenges arise, this strength helps me navigate through. For example, a few weeks ago, while my husband was away, I locked myself out during a walk with my kids and dog. But, I didn’t panic. Instead, my mind became very clear and calm, and I was able to remember that we had a window with a broken latch. I found the tools to pry the window open, and we were back inside in minutes. That’s my "Adaptability" in action.

"Adaptability" falls under the Relationship Building domain of CliftonStrengths. It describes those of us who focus our energy on the present. It’s like looking at life through a panoramic lens that lets you see more of what’s happening around you—people, settings, immediate needs. This helps us stay cool and collected, even in stressful situations. We don’t get stuck on what was supposed to happen; we look for and adapt based on what's happening right now.

If "Adaptability" is one of your top strengths, you’re flexible and spontaneous. You live in the moment, embracing the fullness of each experience. You prefer to go with the flow, especially when life throws curveballs. You excel in dynamic environments, where plans might shift from one moment to the next.

Similarities + Differences With Other Talents

Understanding the "Adaptability" talent involves comparing and contrasting it with other talent themes:

  • "Adaptability" and "Discipline" differ in how they prefer to structure their day; while "Discipline", from the Executing domain, likes consistency, "Adaptability" thrives on variety and spontaneity.

  • "Adaptability" and "Arranger" share the quality of flexibility: "Adaptability" responds to changes in the environment, whereas "Arranger", also from the Executing domain, initiates and manages the changes.
