Empathy + Adaptability: Sensing The Needs of Others

Some CliftonStrengths pairs stand out because they work exceptionally well together. One such pairing is "Empathy" and "Adaptability". With my own experience of having "Adaptability" as my second strength and "Empathy" as my seventh, I've witnessed firsthand how these two talents synergize to help me sense and respond to the needs of others.

I am almost constantly aware of the people around me, tuning into emotions, tones, and body language. These talents enable me to understand, often before a single word is spoken, what someone is feeling or experiencing, coupled with a natural desire to adjust my approach to provide what they need. This combination facilitates a deep connection with people. To properly care for myself and my talents, it also necessitates spending time alone, away from others, to recognize and attend to my own feelings and needs.

Going Deep with "Empathy"

The "Empathy" talent falls within the Relationship Building talent domain. Those high in "Empathy" possess keen sensitivity and an innate understanding of others' emotions. Unlike the intellectual exercise of empathy—imagining oneself in another's shoes to understand their perspective—the CliftonStrengths talent of "Empathy" describes someone attuned to another's feelings, often sharing those emotions directly. A person with a high level of "Empathy" is the friend who intuitively knows what you're going through without any explanation. If you find yourself consistently able to sense others' emotions accurately and intuitively, you might be strong in "Empathy".

Understanding "Adaptability"

The "Adaptability" talent is also within the Relationship Building domain. Individuals high in "Adaptability" can effortlessly adjust their approach based on the demands of the environment or the people they are interacting with. Many of my clients with "Adaptability" in their top 5 describe themselves as chameleons. I observe this talent frequently among great service professionals, such as waiters, who tailor their approach and tone to suit each customer. If you often find yourself saying, "It would depend on the situation," when asked how you would respond to a hypothetical scenario, you might have a strong "Adaptability" talent.

Combining "Empathy" + "Adaptability"

When you combine "Empathy" and "Adaptability", whether in one person or across a team, you create a duo that not only senses what others need and feel but can also change their approach to accommodate those needs. While "Empathy" may identify the needs, it might not act on them without "Adaptability". Conversely, "Adaptability" seeks to respond to the needs of others but may struggle to identify what those needs are without "Empathy". This pairing allows a team or individual to both understand what is needed and adjust their approach to meet those needs effectively.

This combination is particularly powerful in contexts such as:

  • Personalizing customer experiences: "Empathy" can intuitively grasp the customers' emotional states and needs, providing insights into what makes each customer feel valued and understood. "Adaptability" can adjust operations, services, or products on the fly, ensuring that every customer interaction is not just satisfactory but memorable. This unique approach fosters deep customer loyalty and sets the business apart in a competitive market.

  • Nurturing a supportive team culture: "Empathy" can understand and connect with each team member's feelings and perspectives deeply. "Adaptability" can modify management styles, communication, and support mechanisms to meet the evolving needs of the team. This capability ensures a resilient team culture where the members feel valued and supported, enhancing productivity and job satisfaction.

  • Leading organizational change: "Empathy" can sense the organization's emotional climate and the varied responses among employees to the change. "Adaptability" can then navigate this landscape, adjusting communication, policies, and strategies to address concerns and resistance. By aligning the change process with the emotional and practical needs of the workforce, they facilitate a smoother transition and foster a culture of resilience and agility.
