A Peek Inside a Typical Strengths Coaching Session

When I started coaching, it was a big eye-opener for me. Even though I've been coached in many areas of my life, like sports and business, I didn't fully grasp the real power of coaching until I became one myself. This experience made me really excited to show others how focusing on their strengths can make a huge difference, especially for those who might not understand its value right away, just like I used to.

What Exactly Is Coaching?

Coaching involves working together with a coach to help you succeed in your chosen area, such as a sport, business, or leadership. It's a partnership focused on discovering and utilizing your natural talents and skills to enhance your performance. This differs from counseling, which addresses personal issues, decision-making, problem-solving, and wellness improvement. It's also distinct from consulting, where you receive expert advice on specific matters. Coaching is unique because it motivates you to find your own solutions and ways to improve. As a Strengths Coach, I blend elements of counseling, consulting, and coaching, tailoring my approach to where you are in your coaching journey and what you need to advance.

Discover the Power of Strengths Coaching

Strengths-based coaching is different from the usual coaching methods. It focuses on what you're already good at, using your natural talents to help you do your best. Here’s why it's special:

  • Positive Psychology: It's all about celebrating what you're mentally, emotionally, and personally great at.

  • Individuality: It respects that everyone is different, with their own strengths and areas they can improve.

  • Growth Mindset: It sees every challenge as a chance to better use your strengths to succeed.

Prepping for Success

Strengths coaching isn't about learning a bunch of new things. It's more about discovering the talents and skills you already have and using them wisely. That's where the CliftonStrengths Assessment comes in handy—it helps identify your top talents, which is a key part of our work together.

Some people might view unpacking this assessment as a challenging step that could potentially slow down progress. However, the investment of time and energy in understanding one's talents pays off exponentially. Among many benefits, it provides a common language for discussing your strengths clearly, which is crucial as you begin to talk about and use them with others.

A Peek Inside a Typical Session

Curious about what happens in a strengths coaching session? Here’s a simplified rundown:

  • Starting Right: We begin each session with a check-in on how you're feeling and what’s on your mind. This helps you get clear and centered for the session and also serves as an opportunity for you to determine the direction you’d like the session to take.

  • Leveraging Strength: We then look at your CliftonStrengths report, which highlights your top talents and lesser talents. In the beginning, I'll guide you more directly, helping you understand your report and how your talents are playing out in your life. As we progress, we'll integrate your strengths more naturally and focus more on coaching. This means you'll start to recognize and use your talents on your own, figuring out your own path to success.

  • Goal Crafting: Early on, we work together to set clear and meaningful goals. As we go on, we keep track of how you're doing and make any adjustments needed.

  • Action Planning: At the end of each session, we decide on specific steps that use your strengths to move the needle on your goals. This helps you keep growing and using what you've learned, even after our session ends.

Beyond the Session

After each session, I'll send you an email summary. It's not just a quick recap; it's full of useful resources, next steps, and helpful ideas. This way, you can focus on our sessions without worrying about taking notes. The "homework" I give you will help you use your strengths every day, keeping you moving forward.
